Letter Y coloring page

A big outlined capital Y, a V on top of a short post, with four dotted Y's to trace below on a dotted baseline. It suits children from about four to six. Trace the two arms down to the middle, then the post, and say the sound. Yo-yo, yak and yellow start with Y. Color the big Y yellow, naturally, and draw a yo-yo hanging from one arm. Prints on A4 or US Letter.

How to use the letter Y page

The capital Y is a V sitting on a short post. The small y is also a V shape, but its right arm keeps going down below the dotted line. Color the two letters and let your child spot which one has a tail.

For the capital, slant down the two arms to the middle, then draw the post down. For the small y, draw the short left arm, then the long right one from the top all the way below the line. At the start of words Y says y, as in yes, yawn and yard. At the end it often sounds like ee, as in happy and baby. Play the yes game: ask silly questions and let your child nod and say yes.

Questions

Is Y a vowel or a consonant?

Both, in a way. At the start of words like yes it acts as a consonant. At the end of words like happy or my it does the job of a vowel. Young children only need to hear the sounds.

Why does the small y hang below the line?

Like g, j, p and q, the small y has a tail below the baseline. The dotted line on the tracing row shows where the letter sits, so the tail has room underneath.

Can I print this with the letter Z?

Yes. Each letter has its own page, so print Y and Z one after the other. Together with the rest of the set they complete the alphabet from A to Z.
