Letter D coloring page

A big outlined capital D fills the page, one straight side and one big curve, with four dotted D's to trace underneath. It suits children from about three to six. Color the inside of the D one color and the letter itself another, then trace the row saying the sound each time. Dog, duck and dinosaur start with D, and a dinosaur is a fun thing to draw in the margin. Fits A4 and US Letter.

How to use the letter D page

This page has the capital D and the small d next to each other. The capital is a straight line with a big curve on its right, like half a pie. The small d is a circle with a tall line on its right. Color both, then trace the outline of each with a finger and notice that the round part faces the same way in both.

Write the capital in two strokes: straight down, then back to the top and round in one big curve to the bottom. For the small d, draw the circle first, then a tall line from above, straight down beside it. The sound is a quick tap of the tongue: door, doll, duck. Then pick a favorite picture book and look for the letter d on one page. Count how many you find together.

Questions

How can my child tell b and d apart?

Try this: for the small d, the circle comes first, then the tall line, like a drum and then a drumstick. For b it is the opposite order. Tracing both letters often, with the order said out loud, helps.

Is it okay if my child colors outside the lines?

Yes. At three or four, staying inside a big shape is still hard, and that is fine. Hand control grows with practice. Praise the effort and the color choices rather than the neatness.

How long should one session last?

Short is better. Five to ten minutes is plenty for many young children. If they color the letters and lose interest before tracing, keep the page and come back to the tracing row another day.
