Letter R coloring page

A big outlined capital R, a P with an extra leg kicking out, and a tracing row of four dotted R's below. The leg makes it a slightly harder letter, so it suits children from about four to six. Color the post, the bump and the leg in three colors, then trace the row and say the sound. Rabbit, rainbow and rocket start with R. A rainbow arching over the R looks great. Fits A4 and US Letter.

How to use the letter R page

The capital R is a tall line with a bump at the top and a leg kicking out underneath. The small r is short, a line with a tiny arch at the top, like a branch. Color both, then ask your child to find the capital P hidden inside the R.

For the capital, go down, back up, round the bump to the middle, then slant the leg down. For the small r, go down a short line, back up and add the little arch. The sound is a growl, like a tiger: run, red, rain. Then treat the big R as a road: let your child drive a toy car along the outline, making the rrr sound all the way round.

Questions

My child says a w sound instead of r. Is that normal?

The r sound often comes later than many other sounds, and many young children say something like w for a while. If you have questions about your child's speech, ask their teacher or doctor.

How is the small r different from the small n?

The small r stops after a small arch at the top. The small n goes all the way back down to make a full hump. Tracing both side by side shows the difference.

Can I print on cardstock?

If your printer accepts it, yes. Cardstock is sturdier for wall displays and for repeated tracing. The page is set for A4 or US Letter.
