Letter E coloring page
A big outlined capital E with its three horizontal arms, and a tracing row of four dotted E's on a dotted baseline below. Made for children from about three to six. Count the three arms together, color each one a different color, then trace the small E's. Elephant, egg and eagle begin with E. Ask which arm is the shortest, and let them find it. Prints on A4 or US Letter.

How to use the letter E page
On this page the capital E and the small e look nothing alike, which makes for a good talk. The capital is a tall line with three arms pointing right. The small e is round, a short line across the middle with a curve that almost closes, a bit like a smile seen from the side. Color both and ask your child to find the line hidden in each one.
For the capital, go down first, then add the top, middle and bottom arms. For the small e, draw the short line across, then go up, over and round. E is a vowel with two main sounds: short, as in elbow and empty, and long, saying its own name, as in eat. Then use the empty space at the top of the page to draw things that start with E: an envelope, an egg, an eagle.
Questions
What is a vowel, in words a child understands?
You can say that a, e, i, o and u are the special letters that open your mouth and help every word make its sound. Children do not need the full rule yet, just the names of the five.
Can my child paint this page?
Crayons, colored pencils and markers work best on ordinary printer paper. Watercolor can make thin paper wrinkle. If you want to paint, print on thicker paper if your printer accepts it.
Why does the small e start in the middle?
Most letters start at the top, but the small e usually starts with its short middle line, then curves up and round. It feels odd at first, so trace it slowly a few times together.
