How to use the number 6 page

Six is the number on the biggest face of a die, which makes it a fun number to play with. If you have a die, roll it with your child and count the dots each time, celebrating when a six comes up. After the game, color the big 6 and draw six dots inside its loop.

To write the 6, start at the top, curve down and round to the bottom, then loop back up to close a small circle. It is one smooth stroke without lifting the crayon. Then go on a bug hunt in the garden or a picture book: insects like ants, bees and ladybugs have six legs. Count them on a picture together, and draw a six-legged bug in the top space.

Questions

My child mixes up 6 and 9. How do I help?

They are the same shape turned around, so this is very common. Say that the 6 has its loop at the bottom, like a belly, and the 9 has its loop at the top, like a head.

How do I explain six to a young child?

Six is five and one more. Hold up one full hand and one finger from the other. Seeing it on the fingers helps children understand numbers bigger than five.

Can my child trace with a pencil instead of a crayon?

Yes. A soft pencil gives a thinner line and can be erased. Crayons are easier for very small hands. Let your child choose, and try both.
