How to use the number 0 page
Zero is the number for none, and it is easiest to understand with something real. Put three crackers on a plate and eat them one by one, counting down: three, two, one, zero. The empty plate is zero. Then color the big 0 on the page, and leave the middle white, empty like the plate.
To write the 0, start at the top, go round to the left, down, and back up to the start without lifting the crayon. Then play a silly hunt around the house with questions that have zero as an answer: how many elephants are in the kitchen? How many giraffes are under the bed? Zero. Children love saying it. Last, point out that 1 and 0 together make 10, the same as all their fingers.
Questions
Is zero hard for young children?
It can feel strange at first, because it means nothing is there. Real examples, like an empty plate or an empty box, help a lot. Many children understand it by about four or five.
Is the number 0 the same as the letter O?
They look alike. The number zero is often a bit taller and narrower than the letter O. Children often mix them up at first, and that is normal.
Can I print all the numbers from 0 to 9?
Yes. There is one free page for each number from 0 to 9, all in the same style, each with a big outlined number and a row of four dotted copies to trace.
