Desert (easy)

easy

A smiling gecko with big round eyes and spots along its back is ready to explore this sunny desert. Two cacti with upturned arms stand behind it, along with a flat-topped rock butte, small stones and spiky tufts of grass. The thick, rounded outlines are easy to follow for children aged about 2 to 5. Suggest a bright green or orange gecko with spots in a contrasting color, then fill the sand with yellow. Big crayons or markers are perfect for the wide spaces.

Basking on a large rock, a spotted lizard lifts its head to look out over a calm desert. Tall cacti with prickly outlines stand on either side, a round barrel cactus sits in the corner, and spiky plants grow among scattered pebbles. Rolling dunes lead to a flat-topped mesa under a round sun and two clouds. Kids aged about 5 to 10 will enjoy the mix of big shapes and small details. Try warm desert tones with colored pencils: peach, sand and terracotta for the land, and leave the sky a pale blue.

Desert (detailed)

detailed

A textured lizard with a spotted back rests on a big cracked boulder, its long tail curling down over the rocks. Around it grow a spiky agave, a barrel cactus, prickly pear pads topped with blossoms and tall branching cacti. In the distance, layered mesas and dunes stretch beneath a round sun and drifting clouds. The fine lines and full scene suit older kids and adults who enjoy natural detail. Colored pencils let you build the rock gradually, starting with tan and adding rust in the cracks for depth. Prints on A4 or US Letter.

Geometric patterns cover every surface of this desert page for experienced adult colorists. A large lizard decorated with triangles, scales and bands climbs across a mosaic boulder marked with circular medallions. It is surrounded by blooming prickly pears, tall ribbed cacti, spiky agave leaves and big desert flowers, with a mesa, rolling hills and a sun with swirling clouds behind. The detail runs edge to edge in true zentangle style. Fine-tip markers in turquoise, coral and sand give it a bright southwestern feel.
