Carved into a rocky cliff, this grand facade has two rows of columns, statues on pedestals, a round domed pavilion at the top and a tall doorway in the middle. It is the Treasury, or Al-Khazneh, at Petra in Jordan, cut straight into the sandstone by the Nabataeans about 2,000 years ago. Thick, clean outlines make it a good fit for children aged about 2 to 5. Rosy pink and peach crayons will give the stone the warm color that earned Petra its nickname, the rose city.

Towering sandstone walls close in around the Treasury of Petra, Jordan, as if you had just walked out of the narrow canyon that leads to it. Columns with leafy capitals, carved figures in niches, a pediment and a round central pavilion with an urn on top are all drawn in clear lines, with rocks and desert shrubs at the base. The building was carved directly into the cliff face, not built from blocks. Kids aged about 5 to 10 can manage the moderate detail. Markers in salmon, apricot and coral will bring out the rosy rock. Prints on A4 or US Letter.

Petra (detailed)

detailed

Carved straight into a towering sandstone cliff, the Treasury of Petra in Jordan stands tall in this detailed drawing. Rows of columns with leafy capitals, triangular pediments, a round central pavilion topped with an urn and weathered statues between the pillars make up the two-story facade. Steps lead to the dark doorway, and boulders and dry desert shrubs sit at the foot of the rock face. Fine lines suit older kids and adults who enjoy architecture. Petra is often called the Rose City for the color of its stone, so layer rosy pinks, peach and terracotta pencils.

Decorated camels steal the scene in front of the Treasury in Petra, Jordan: one rests on a patterned rug wearing a tasseled blanket and beaded harness, while another stands on the left. Patterned clay pots and flowering shrubs frame the right side, and carved stone ripples on every cliff around the columned facade. Dense, fine and filled edge to edge, it is made for experienced adult colorists. Petra was carved by the Nabataeans around 2,000 years ago. Choose fine-tip pens in rose, burnt orange and turquoise, letting the turquoise pop on the blankets and pots.
