How to use the swirls and dots cards
After cutting the four cards, try making a simple holder: fold a strip of card into a triangle tent and clip a card to one face, so it stands on its own beside your baby on the play mat. You can change the card each day. Always stay close, and take the stand away when playtime is over.
Newborns see bold high-contrast shapes best at about 20 to 30 cm and look longer at them, so the cards work well during short, calm moments such as after a feed or a diaper change. Name what is on the card in a soft voice: "a spiral, round and round". Watch your baby's face; once they turn away or start to fuss, put the cards down and simply cuddle. A minute or two is enough.
Questions
How long should I show the cards?
A minute or two at a time is plenty. Watch your baby and stop as soon as they look away, yawn or fuss. Short, relaxed moments are better than long sessions.
Can I hang the cards over the crib?
No. Keep the cards out of the crib and away from your baby's mouth. Use them during supervised awake time, held in your hand or propped up on a mat beside you.
Which printer setting should I use?
Choose your printer's best quality or darkest black setting so the patterns print solid. Print on A4 or US Letter, ideally on card stock, then cut along the lines.
