Coolorio vs Canva coloring pages: free templates and photo pages compared

Coolorio and Canva compared for coloring pages: templates, the free AI photo generator, editing, levels, PDF books and privacy, as checked in late 2026.

Short answer: Canva is the better pick if you like designing: it offers coloring page templates and a free AI generator that turns a photo into line art you can edit, title and export as a PDF book. Coolorio, our own site, is the better pick for a ready-made keepsake page with four levels by age and stated photo deletion.

Coolorio is the site you are reading, so we have kept this fair. Our notes on Canva come from its public coloring pages as we checked them at the end of October 2026. Canva changes features often, so check its pages too.

What Canva does well

Canva is a full design tool, and that is its strength here. Its AI coloring page generator takes an uploaded photo and turns it into line art. You can then change the art style and the aspect ratio, add a title and page numbers, design a cover and an intro page, and export the whole thing as a multi-page PDF book. When we checked, Canva said generation and download cost nothing, with no paid plan required, and it stated no credit limit.

It also has 1,615 coloring page templates to start from, and you can edit any of them. If you enjoy laying out pages yourself, adding text or mixing photos with drawings, Canva gives you far more control than Coolorio does.

Many families already use Canva for invitations and school projects, so there is nothing new to learn. And like Coolorio, Canva is an Australian company.

What Coolorio does differently

Coolorio is not a design tool. It is built to give you a finished page quickly. You upload one phone photo, choose a level for the age of the person coloring, and get a page that looks like the people and animals in it.

The four levels are tuned by age. Simple has big closed shapes that a toddler can fill with a crayon. Medium suits school-age children. Detailed suits older kids and adults. Expert has very fine lines for complex coloring and A3 prints. Canva lets you pick an art style, but we did not see levels tied to age. Our guide on choosing the right detail level by age explains the levels.

The keepsake layout is done for you. The PDF comes in A4, US Letter or A3, with an optional title, a name and age stamp, the date the photo was taken, and a small color guide. In Canva you can add these by hand if you want them.

The first page is free at full quality, with no card. Paid page packs are coming soon, while the site finishes its launch. Separately, Coolorio's free library has over 600 pages, each at four levels, with no sign-up.

When Canva is the better choice

  • You enjoy design and want to edit the page yourself.
  • You want a whole book with a cover, an intro page and page numbers.
  • You want to mix a coloring page with your own text, photos or graphics.
  • You already use Canva and want everything in one place.
  • You want the generator free for many photos, with no stated limit when we checked.

When Coolorio is the better choice

  • You want a page that is ready to print in a minute, with no layout work.
  • You want the detail level matched to a child's age.
  • You want the name, age and photo date on the page without adding them yourself.
  • You want a free coloring page library sorted by level, such as Christmas or letters.
  • You want stated photo terms: stored privately in Sydney, Australia, deleted 7 days after upload, never used to train AI models. See the privacy policy.

How to try both

  1. Choose one clear photo with a single subject and a plain background.
  2. Run it through Canva's AI coloring page generator, then print it.
  3. Make your free first page on Coolorio from the same photo, at the level that suits the person coloring.
  4. Compare the two prints: do the lines close, does the face look right, and which one does the child want to color?

If you want to do it all by hand, our guide on making a coloring page in Photoshop, Canva or AI walks through the steps. For a book of several pages, see how to make a coloring book from photos.

Frequently asked questions

Is Canva's AI coloring page generator free?

When we checked at the end of October 2026, Canva said generating and downloading a coloring page cost nothing, with no paid plan required, and it stated no credit limit. Some extras, such as Brand Kit, are Pro features.

Can Canva make a coloring book?

Yes. Canva lets you add a title, page numbers, a cover and an intro page, and export several pages as one PDF book. Coolorio gives you single keepsake pages as PDFs, ready to print.

Does Canva have difficulty levels for kids?

Canva lets you choose an art style for the generated page. We did not see levels tied to age. Coolorio offers four levels, from Simple for toddlers to Expert for adults.

Which is quicker for one page of my child?

Usually Coolorio, because the layout, name stamp and date are already done. Canva is quick too if you know the editor, and it gives you more freedom if you want to change the design.
