A Coloring Page of Your Cat: Fur, Whiskers and Markings

Make a coloring page of your cat from a photo: the still, eye-level shot, which of 4 detail levels suits tabbies, black cats and fluffy breeds, and printing.

To make a coloring page of your cat, photograph it at eye level in window light while it is settled, crop close to the face, upload the photo and choose a detail level by coat: Medium for most cats, Simple for very fluffy or black cats, Detailed or Expert for tabbies and tortoiseshells whose markings are the point. The conversion takes about a minute, and the first page on Coolorio is free with no account.

Quick steps

  1. Wait for a settled moment: a cat on a windowsill, a sofa arm or a sunny floor.
  2. Get down to eye level with the window light falling on the face, not behind it.
  3. Make a small noise (a rustling bag works) to get the ears forward and eyes on you, then shoot a burst.
  4. Crop to the head and shoulders, keeping the ears and whiskers inside the frame.
  5. Pick the detail level for the coat and download the PDF.

What makes a good cat photo for a coloring page?

A line drawing is built from edges, and a cat offers wonderful ones: the triangle of the ears, the almond eyes, the whisker pads, the curve of the back. What helps the tool find them:

  • Eye level. Shots from above turn a cat into a head with a small body. Sit on the floor.
  • Window light from the side or front. It shows the shape of the face. Backlight from the window behind leaves a silhouette with no features.
  • Eyes open, pupils normal. Flash gives green glowing eyes. Daylight gives the slit or round pupils that make the cat look like itself.
  • A calm background. A plain cushion, a wall, a sheet. A patterned blanket adds a hundred lines that compete with the fur.
  • Contrast. A black cat on a white sheet, a white cat on a mid-gray sofa.

Cats blink slowly and look away often. A burst of ten frames almost always holds one with both eyes on the lens.

Which detail level suits which coat?

Short-haired solid cats (gray, ginger, white, cream). The easiest. Clean outline, clear face. Medium for children, Detailed for adults who want the whisker pads and the texture of the nose.

Tabbies (classic, mackerel, spotted). The stripes are the whole appeal and they convert beautifully. Detailed or Expert keeps the pattern on the forehead and the rings on the tail. Medium softens it to the main stripes, which suits younger children.

Tortoiseshell and calico. Patches of color become patches of outline. Detailed draws the boundaries between colors so the page can be colored true to life, and the color guide in the keepsake PDF helps match the shades. Medium simplifies the patchwork.

Black cats. The hardest. Dark fur shows little internal detail, so the outline carries the page. Photograph against a light background in good daylight and choose Simple or Medium. Detailed on a black cat tends to produce solid black areas.

Long-haired and fluffy breeds (Persian, Maine Coon, Ragdoll, Birman). Fur turns into dense lines at high detail. Simple or Medium keeps the ruff and the tail readable. Expert on A3 can be lovely for an adult who enjoys texture, but try Medium first.

Pointed cats (Siamese, Ragdoll, Birman). The dark mask, ears and paws against a pale body are a gift to line art. Medium or Detailed both work well.

How do you handle whiskers and ears?

Whiskers are fine white lines against whatever is behind them. They show best when the background is darker than the whiskers, such as a mid-gray wall, and they disappear against white. If whiskers matter to you, choose Detailed and a slightly darker background. Ears need space: leave a margin above them when you crop so the tips do not touch the page edge.

What about a cat that will not sit still?

Use what cats do naturally. Mealtime, the first minute after waking, and the spot where the sun lands in the afternoon are reliable. Photograph the sleeping cat if you must; a curled-up cat is a classic coloring page and the closed eyes read as peaceful rather than wrong.

What to do with the page

Print on 80 gsm paper for pencils or heavier paper for markers. Add the cat's name and the photo date with the keepsake options so it stays labeled. A set of three or four pages across the seasons makes a small book, and the gift packs on the pricing page bring the per-page cost down for a batch.

Free cat and animal pages to print now

The free templates include a cat that prints in seconds, and the fish is an obvious companion. Both are among the 74 free pages with no sign-up, and they keep a child busy while the photo page is being made. Uploaded photos are deleted after 7 days and are never used to train AI.

Frequently asked

What is the best detail level for a coloring page of a cat?

Medium for most cats: it keeps the face, ears and main markings while dropping the clutter. Choose Detailed or Expert for a tabby or tortoiseshell whose markings are the point, and Simple or Medium for a black cat or a very fluffy breed, where higher levels produce dense lines or solid dark areas.

How do I photograph a cat for a coloring page?

Wait for a settled moment, sit at the cat's eye level with window light on its face, make a small noise to bring the ears forward and eyes to the lens, and shoot a burst of ten. Crop to the head and shoulders with space above the ears. Avoid flash, which makes the eyes glow.

Do black cats work as coloring pages?

Yes, if the photo is taken against a light background in good daylight so the outline is clear, and the detail level is Simple or Medium. Dark fur shows little internal detail, so the shape of the ears, eyes and body carries the page; higher levels can turn the coat into solid black.
