Ideas for coloring the Filigree mandala

Filigree is named after fine metalwork, so a metal palette suits it. Try a monochrome gold version: a pale yellow base on every shape, then ochre on the nested petals, then a touch of brown at the base of each petal for shadow. The beaded bands can stay pale, catching the light. Silver works the same way with grays and a cool blue.

Because the rings are thin, work outside in and color with the page turned so your hand rests below the area you are working on. A 0.3 mm fine liner or a very sharp pencil is the right size for the beads. The central flower is small, so finish it last with your steadiest hand. Spread the page across a few calm evenings; rushing the last rings is where most smudges happen.

Questions

What is the difference between Filigree and Lace?

Filigree is an expert page with fourteen thin rings, while Lace is a detailed page with nine. Filigree has more beaded bands and arches, so it takes longer and needs finer tools.

Can I color it in one color only?

Yes, and it suits the design. Use three or four shades of one color, lightest on the beads and darkest at petal bases, and leave a little white between shapes.

Which paper should I print on?

Regular A4 or US Letter paper is fine for pencils and fine liners. For alcohol markers, use a heavier paper or put a spare sheet underneath to protect the table.
