A friendly humpback whale smiles up from the page, with a water spout bursting from its head and its tail flipped high behind it. Long scalloped flippers, a row of bumps on the snout and wavy throat grooves give it character without making it fussy. Big open spaces and bold lines make this a good choice for toddlers and preschoolers. Try a deep blue for the back and a pale sky blue for the striped throat, using chunky crayons or washable markers.

Gliding through clear water, a humpback whale swims between rising bubbles and three little fish. Its long knobbly flippers, grooved throat and bumpy snout are easy to spot, and the scene ends at a sandy sea floor with stones and swaying seaweed, under a wavy surface line at the top. Children around 5 to 10 will enjoy the extra details without getting lost. Watercolor pencils are fun here: color the sea light blue, then brush over it with a damp brush for a soft underwater wash. Prints on A4 or US Letter.

Sunbeams slant down through rippled water as a great humpback whale swims over a busy reef. Barnacle bumps, long throat grooves and textured skin cover its body, while its huge flippers spread wide. Below, branching corals, brain coral, tube sponges and swaying kelp crowd the sea floor, and a school of small fish swims past on the right. With its fine lines and full scene, it fits older kids and adult colorists. Blend slate blue and soft gray colored pencils on the whale, then add coral pinks and oranges below.

Rising through a swirling sea, a humpback whale shows off its grooved throat, a calm round eye and long pectoral fins decorated with flower mandalas. Its tail flukes curl up toward the top left corner. Jellyfish drift past, schools of small fish swim alongside, and bubbles and spirals fill the water. The seabed holds kelp, coral, tube sponges, a dotted starfish and a nautilus shell. Made for adult colorists who love an all-over, intricate page. Try graded ocean blues from navy to aqua, with the whale in slate and soft pearl tones.
