With a row of big pointed plates along its back and spikes on its tail, this smiling stegosaurus is ready for some color. It stands on four sturdy legs with rounded toes, and a few oval spots decorate its round body. There is no background, so little artists aged about 2 to 5 can focus on the large shapes outlined in thick lines. Paint the body green with finger paint or washable tempera and give each plate a different bright color.

A friendly stegosaurus walks past a lake while a volcano smokes in the distance. Two rows of leaf-shaped plates rise along its back, its tail ends in sharp spikes, and oval spots of different sizes line its body. Clouds, low hills, bushes, grass tufts and smooth rocks complete the scene. With clear outlines and a moderate amount of detail, it suits kids aged about 5 to 10. Felt-tip markers are a good choice: color the plates in warm orange and red, then pick a soft green for the body.

Head low, a realistic stegosaurus walks along the shore of a mountain lake. Its body is textured with small scales, the tall back plates are lined with fine ridges, and four long spikes tip its tail. Tall conifers rise on the left, a waterfall cascades down cliffs on the right, and ferns, rocks and a fallen log fill the foreground. This complete landscape in fine lines suits older kids and adults looking for a relaxing challenge. Use colored pencils to shade the plates from deep red at the base to golden yellow at the tips. Prints on A4 or US Letter.

Mandala flowers, scale patterns and decorative bands cover a stegosaurus from head to tail on this intricate page. Its tall back plates are filled with petal and leaf designs, and its legs wear patterned rings like bracelets. The background leaves no blank space: ferns, palm fronds, hibiscus blossoms, fan-shaped leaves, a spiral fiddlehead, a mountain and a patterned sun crowd every corner. It is aimed at experienced adult colorists who enjoy zentangle-style pages filled edge to edge. Gel pens in metallic and pastel shades add a lovely shimmer to the plates.
