Shark (easy)

easy

Wearing a big toothy grin, this cartoon shark looks more friendly than fierce. It has round eyes, three gill lines, a tall fin on top, two side fins and a forked tail, all drawn with heavy, simple outlines on a plain white background. Perfect for toddlers and preschoolers learning to stay inside the lines. Go for a cool gray or soft blue body with a white tummy, and add a pink tongue with a crayon.

Under the sea, a smiling shark swims past three little striped fish and a trail of bubbles. Down on the sea floor you can find wavy seaweed, tube coral, branching coral, rounded rocks and a dotted starfish. The friendly face and clear outlines suit kids around 5 to 10 who like a full but manageable scene. Use markers in blue and gray for the shark, then make the little fish bright orange and yellow so they stand out against the water.

Shark (detailed)

Light rays stream down from the surface as a large shark cruises over a coral reef with a toothy grin. A sea turtle with a patterned shell swims beneath it, a school of small fish passes above, and striped angelfish and clownfish hide among branching corals, brain coral, tube sponges and kelp. The fine lines and busy reef make it a good fit for older kids and adults. Color the shark in steel blue fading to white on the belly, and give the clownfish bright orange with white bands.

Shark (expert)

A grinning shark swims through a reef packed edge to edge with detail. Its body is covered in zigzag, scale and swirl patterns, and all around it you'll find striped fish, a school of tiny fish, tangled seaweed, corals, a spiral shell, a sand dollar, a starfish and a sunken ship tilted in the top right corner. This page is designed for experienced adult colorists ready for a long project. Fine-tip markers in ocean blues and greens work well, saving warm yellow and orange for the fish.
