Sea turtle (easy)

A happy little sea turtle paddles through the water with a wide grin and big shiny eyes. Its shell is split into a few large sections and the flippers carry round spots, perfect for small hands to fill in. Below, simple coral, a wavy strand of seaweed, two rocks and a scallop shell rest on the seabed, with bubbles floating all around. Thick, bold lines make this a good pick for children aged about 2 to 5. Washable markers in green and teal give the turtle a fresh ocean look in just a few strokes.

Gliding over a coral garden, a friendly sea turtle turns its head with a gentle smile while three little striped fish swim ahead. Its flippers are covered in a pattern of small scales and its shell is divided into neat plates. The seabed below has tall seaweed, branching coral, tube sponges, a dotted starfish and smooth pebbles, with bubbles rising all around. The level of detail is just right for kids from about 5 to 10. Pick a few shades of green and brown for the shell plates and alternate them like a mosaic. Prints on A4 or US Letter.

Sunbeams slant down through rippling water onto a sea turtle swimming over a lush reef. The turtle is drawn with lifelike scales on its head and flippers and a shell made of large, clean plates. Around it, a school of small fish passes overhead, striped butterflyfish drift to the right, and the reef below bursts with branching coral, a brain coral, sea anemones and tall tube sponges. Older kids and adults will enjoy the fine lines and full scene. Watercolor pencils are a great match: lay down a soft aqua for the water, then blend with a damp brush for a sunlit glow.

Every inch of this page is packed with pattern. A large sea turtle swims across the center, its shell filled with leaf and petal motifs and its flippers broken into tiny geometric cells. Angelfish, striped reef fish and wavy seaweed crowd the top, while the bottom overflows with tube sponges, a spiral seashell, a beaded starfish, an anemone and dense coral. It is made for experienced adult colorists who like zentangle-style pages filled edge to edge. Fine-liner markers or sharp gel pens in a limited palette of teal, coral and gold keep the busy design readable.
