Panda (easy)

Happy and round, this baby panda sits with its feet stretched out, showing big paw pads, while it nibbles on a bamboo stalk held in both paws. A few long leaves sprout from the stalk, and the face has large eye patches, a small nose and a cheerful smile. The thick outlines and roomy shapes are just right for little ones aged about 2 to 5. Use a black crayon for the ears, arms, legs and eye patches, leave the rest white, and make the bamboo bright green.

In a quiet bamboo grove, a chubby panda sits on the grass munching a leafy stalk, its padded feet turned toward you. Tall bamboo stems rise on the left, rounded bushes fill the back, and tufts of grass and two smooth stones dot the ground. The lines are clear with a touch of fur texture, a good step up for children around 5 to 10. Try markers for the panda's black patches, then mix two or three shades of green for the bamboo and bushes so the background feels lively.

Panda (detailed)

Sitting comfortably on a rock, a giant panda munches a sprig of bamboo leaves while gripping the stalk with both paws, its round foot pads turned toward you. A tall bamboo grove rises on the left, and behind the panda a stream runs from a waterfall below craggy peaks and leafy trees. Grasses and a single flower fill the foreground. Fine lines and a full scene suit older kids and adults. Keep the panda's patches a rich charcoal black with soft pencil, and surround it with fresh spring greens and a pale blue stream. Prints on A4 or US Letter.

Bamboo stalks and leaves fill the page from edge to edge, framing a large panda that clutches a stem close to its face. Its whole body is drawn in scale-like and feather-like patterns, the eye patches hold tiny mandala motifs, and the round foot pads turn into flower mandalas. Small blossoms peek out between the leaves. Experienced adult colorists will find hours of detailed work here. For a fresh twist, skip black and white entirely and color the panda in jade, teal and plum with fine-liner markers.
