Fox (easy)

A smiling fox cub sits upright beside a little tree stump, its big fluffy tail curled up behind it and three autumn leaves scattered on the ground in front. The shapes are large and the outlines are thick, so small hands can stay inside the lines without much trouble. It is a lovely first page for toddlers and preschoolers aged about 2 to 5. Try chunky orange and brown crayons for the fur, then let your child pick bright reds and yellows for the leaves. Prints on A4 or US Letter.

Under a big leafy tree, a cheerful fox stands on all fours in a forest clearing while maple leaves drift down around it. Look closer and you will find a tree stump with two mushrooms, a pair of rounded rocks, low bushes and little tufts of grass. The scene has plenty to explore without being crowded, which suits kids aged about 5 to 10. Colored pencils work well here: give the fox a rusty orange coat with a white chest and tail tip, and turn the falling leaves into a mix of gold, red and brown.

Standing proudly on a mossy boulder, a lifelike fox gazes off to the side while its bushy tail sweeps behind it. The fine-line forest around it is full of things to color: a tall maple trunk, pine trees, distant mountains, a stream with a small waterfall, wild mushrooms and sprigs of berries and flowers. With its feathery fur texture and layered background, this page is best for older kids, teens and adults. Build the fur in light layers of orange, burnt sienna and cream with colored pencils for a soft, realistic finish.

Every inch of this page is packed with pattern. A seated fox looks out calmly, its body and long curled tail filled with leaf shapes, feather motifs and tiny swirls, surrounded by oak leaves, acorns, clusters of berries, spotted mushrooms, a knotted tree trunk and a woodland stream with pines beyond. Designed for experienced adult colorists who love dense zentangle-style detail, it rewards slow, patient sessions. Fine-tip markers in a warm autumn palette of rust, ochre and deep green let you pick out each tiny segment cleanly. Prints on A4 or US Letter.
